Integrated Process Analysis Solution for the Petrochemical Refining Industry
Scheme Overview
Oil refining generally refers to the process of petroleum refining, which involves separating crude oil through distillation to produce fuel oils such as kerosene, gasoline, and diesel that are suitable for use in internal combustion engines. The byproducts include liquefied petroleum gas and residual oil—components heavier than fuel oils—which are further chemically converted into fuel oils via processes such as thermal cracking and catalytic cracking. Some of these fuel oils undergo additional refining steps, including hydrogenation. The heaviest fraction, known as vacuum residue, is processed through solvent deasphalting to yield deasphalted oil and petroleum asphalt; alternatively, it can be subjected to delayed coking, a process that cracks heavy oils into lighter fuel oil components while simultaneously producing petroleum coke as a byproduct. Lubricant-type refineries employ processes such as solvent refining, solvent dewaxing, and supplemental hydrogenation to produce a wide range of specialized industrial oils, including engine lubricants, machinery oils, transformer oils, and hydraulic oils. Today, hydrogenation processes are increasingly being used in the production of both fuel oils and lubricants. Moreover, refineries that serve as feedstock suppliers for petrochemical production also utilize hydrocracking processes.
